“Sign, sign, everywhere a sign, blocking out the scenery, breaking my mind… “ I’m thinking that the Five Man Electrical Band may have enjoyed this one though. This trail marker located along the Oldtown Road seems to blend in quite nicely with the scenery, and it points hikers toward the C&O Canal Towpath.
The sign is located in the woods about a mile or two east of the entrance to Carroll Road. Distances can be deceptive, but I’m thinking that it’s a pretty good haul down to the canal. I suppose there is only one way to find out, and that’s an adventure for another day.
I’m not sure that I’ll ever see a billboard as lovely as a tree (thank you, Ogden Nash), but I do like to know where I’m going. After doing some further reading, I’ve found out that this area is part of the C&O Canal/Long Pond Shuttle. Parts of the hike have been described as difficult, and the term Long Pond corresponds with a very scenic section of Fifteen Mile Creek. Thankfully, there are search engines that lead to more knowledgeable people, and I think we’ve found somewhere to go and something to do after we’ve finished our bike trip. Can’t you read the sign?
